When Camas High School (CHS) senior Ethan Harris was younger, he tried out for every sport to see which he liked best. He always found himself coming back to basketball, which turned out to be a successful path for him.
“My love for it really started when we would be playing together as a family just for the fun of it,” Harris said.

Harris started playing basketball competitively in his freshman year.
“I’d say I always took it somewhat serious, but [I] never [completely took it serious] until my freshman year when I realized how good I could be [if I did] start taking [it] serious.” Harris said.
According to Harris, his career throughout high school has been great for him because of his teammates and coaches.
Harris has faced many physical challenges throughout his basketball career, including numerous injuries.
“Between breaking bones and twisting ankles, I have sat out [for] months at a time,” Harris said.
Harris’ love for basketball drove him to keep going through the recovery. .
Harris’ experience in high school basketball has not been typical, as he has had three coaches in three years. Having many coaches has provided Harris with different perspectives on the game.
“[I have learned] how to play with and understand different coaching styles and different types of offense,” Harris said.
Harris’ current coach at CHS, Scott Thompson, has observed Harris’ skillful performance on the court.

“[Harris] is an amazing player. His unbelievable work ethic has turned him into one of the best players in the history of Southwest Washington,” Thompson said.
Harris recently committed to playing for the University of Iowa over other offers including Gonzaga University. When choosing a school, Harris prioritized culture and the quality of the coaches he would play under.
“The choice was difficult as all [of] the schools were elite.” Harris said.
Harris is very excited to play for the University of Iowa because of their play style. He believes that, with enough hard work, he will be put into rotation.
Before leaving for college, Harris hopes to win the state title this year — a goal that his coach believes is very possible.
“[Harris] has a great team around him. He is ready to lead them and make one last run to the Tacoma Dome,” Thompson said.
In terms of success, Harris believes consistent effort is the key for student athletes.
“There is a reason it is cliché. Consistency wins,” Harris said.
