Camas High School (CHS) students interested in the value of investing and finance have the opportunity to join Investment Club, a student-run organization that teaches the tools to build a financially stable future.

Investing can be quite a confusing and intimidating concept. To combat this, an introduction is crucial to new investors, detailing the simplicity of investing.
“We don’t expect students to just know everything about investing,” Sean Tamura, who serves as Investment Club adviser, said. “Early on, we go through a lot of very basic information, and how to actually invest in these different types of securities, and just a lot of basic terminology.”
After the first few meetings, the club officers will come together and determine specific topics they want to cover in future meetings.
“Most recently, we talked about leverage funds that are accessible in the stock market, and how to actually use leverage in order to magnify potential returns,” Tamura said.
Day trading is another very popular topic when it comes to investing. CHS senior Andrew Neil, Investment Club officer of marketing, recently gave a presentation educating club members on the pros and cons of day trading.
“Day trading is high-risk, low-reward, unless you’re lucky,” Neil said.
Investment club not only focuses on the stock market, but also on personal finance.

“80% of [investing] revolves around the stock market of some sort,” Tamura said. “The remaining 20% is things like how to get involved in real estate, and how to actually start a business to make money.”
Trust and honesty are some of the most essential values when it comes to investing. The Investment Club prioritizes teaching these values to club members during their meetings.
“We try to be as transparent as we can, so we think a really good thing to do is to just be very honest and open with students about how we personally use our money to invest,” Tamura said.
“Investing in stocks in a smart manner can make you a lot of money,” CHS senior and member of Investment Club Beckham Huynh said. “You have to learn about all of the strategies and necessary information about what’s going on in the world, so that you can put that money into stocks.”
Investment Club is open to anyone looking to grow their knowledge and wealth through investment. Those interested in joining the club can attend meetings every Thursday during Student Support Time in room 905.
