At Camas High School, many teachers require students to work together as a team. Many projects, labs and even homework assignments can be based on a group activity. But most scholars do not support this type of task, and mostly after teacher’s “discuss it as a group” there is a loud silence between them. “I don’t like group projects because it is hard to connect with your teammates, especially explain them your point of view, no one will listen and no one cares about your opinion or ideas. Every team has one or two “captains”, who usually don’t help their partners, and they lead all the squad no matter how and no matter what. I am not one of these people, so that’s the reason why I don’t like and don’t believe in teamwork,” explains Vanya Dovgan. Believe it or not, almost 74% of teenagers consider themselves introverts. The internet has a big influence on the real life of students and their communicating with each other; if someone doesn’t want to speak or listen to annoying people, there is a way out – take out a phone, headphones and start a funny adventure called “social media”. But why do all the teachers still want students to work as a group?
But why is teamwork so important and essential? Why does it matter so much?
Partnership improves many important things that everyone will need in college, school, in work or even in friendship. Here are three valuable reasons why it is unacceptable to skip teamwork and ignore the participation in it:
- Teamwork provides great learning opportunities. Working in a team enables us to learn from one another’s mistakes. You are able to avoid future errors, solve eventual problems and gain insight from differing perspectives. Also, someday you definitely will be working with people who think and act in other way you used to. Different people – immeasurable amount of ways to deal with troubles.
- Teamwork encourages communication between team members. For many students this point is the main reason why teamwork is afful and hard. But having a communication skills is one of the reasons of success. Almost every job in the world obligate people to connect with each other. Further, speaking in public helps to improve your speech and be confident in the audience.
- More people – more ideas. In every teamwork brainstorming is one of the most important thing to get the ideas. As a result, more ideas are developed and productivity improves.
How to work together?
The most important thing that will hook up a team is support and good relationships with partners.
So first of all, you need to know your teammates better. Ask some questions about their hobbies, music, favorite movies, etc. That will help you start a good friendship or at least a partnership.
Second of all, decide everyone’s performance in a project. After teacher had formed the teams – students need to define clear roles of each of team member. For example, designate people who will research the information and then people who will organize it, who will come to the shop and buy supplies for the cardboard, and even designers and artists.
Third of all, the most important thing is to support a sense of community. It means always keep in touch with your friends and give them a proper amount of support. “A team without support and a good relationships between teammates is not a real team,” added Timothy Avilov.
