Wrestling is a big deal at Camas High, with students starting preparation early before the season and even after the season too. This season, the team has high expectations and are looking forward to the hard work and the success ahead of them.
The Head Coach, Cory Vom Baur says that “the wrestling team is a great place for people with a competitive spirit, looking to overpower their opponent with strength and skill.” With three new members of the coaching staff, the athletes will be able to receive great advice and technique to advance their performance. The team as a whole will be just as strong as ever with multiple strong veteran wrestlers.
Along with this, the team is excited to welcome many new wrestlers for both boys and girls, the younger wrestlers will be important to the team with their strong effort and practice. Freshman, Porter Craig, who has been wrestling for 10 years has many goals this season, including placing at state for his weight class.
Camas has maintained its name as a high school wrestling power for many years and nothing this season has changed. The first meet of the season against Battleground was a victory for Camas, coming out on top over the Tigers. Furthermore, Camas won its first tournament of the season.
All the competitors are looking to come out on top of many more as the season goes along. Senior Isaac Duncan enjoys participating in the sport because “it is a very competitive sport” he enjoys how it pushes him to be better than he was the day before. It has “helped [him] mentally grow as a person and it helps him to overcome challenges.” He is looking forward to the rest of the season and has plans to place at state and become a better wrestler, day by day.
As for the girls wrestling team, sophomore Lillie Taylor says that the girls wrestling team has added quite a few more members this year with freshmen and other first-timers.
In conclusion, the wrestling season is an exciting time throughout the school year for participants with great expectations. Come and support your Camas Papermaker wrestlers at their next meet.
