They start the conversation with some quips about jobs and then move on to the president’s life, more specifically, focusing on his life before the presidency, and how he is dealing with not being the president anymore. They talk about his early life through the lens of talking about his book, Dreams of My Father.

They cut away from Obama’s life to talk about the civil rights movement and a video with Congressman George Lewis about Edmund Pettus bridge and an event known as Bloody Sunday.

The first thing to know is that the setup is not like other talk shows. There is no desk, just two chairs facing each other, and an hour to talk. The show is also different from the late night talk shows that Letterman has done before in that he does not have to play to a large demographic, he can go as deep as he likes into the conversation. He uses this to his advantage and is a conversationalist first before being a comedian.

Obama and Letterman play off each other very well with humor shining through in their conversation. The conversation itself was insightful with many emotional and powerful moments.

The show was a great look at the civil rights movement. It showed the experiences of the people who had actually been there, leading, and the people who came after. The talk with Lewis had been an interesting look into the past of America and showed a snapshot of how things have changed.

The show is extremely interesting and insightful and gave a new view of the history and politics of America. The next guests to appear on the show will be George Clooney, Jay Z, Tina Fey, Howard Stern, and Pakistani activist Malala Yousafzai.
