Kristine Straw is a new health teacher at Camas; however, she is not new to Camas. Straw was born in Vancouver and has been living in the Vancouver-Camas area ever since. She studied Public Health and Promotion for her undergraduate degree, while her master’s degree is in Teaching/Education.
Health isn’t always a comfortable subject to teach, but Straw expressed a feeling of happiness in choosing health. She believes she gets to know the students more personally, considering that health is a subject that helps students make good life decisions. Straw loves getting to be close to her students, and she loves to affect them in a good way. This is why she started teaching, for “the relationship with kids.” knew from the very beginning that teaching is what she was born to do. Both of her parents and all of her siblings were, or are educators. Her parents made her realize how much she can affect people in a positive way by teaching. When asked about mentors she had that made her want to teach she told me her parents, she also said that she was.”five years old playing schoolteacher in her bedroom.”

Straw admits there are hard parts to teaching, like making time for herself and her family. As a teacher, she is required to plan lessons, teach them, grade the homework from the lesson, and give meaningful advice to the students for her work, and between all of that, she has to take care of her infant daughter. However, Straw says that she, given a choice, would not switch her career because she loves teaching. In fact, when asked about her future plans, she said,“I plan to continue my career in education. I have no plans to switch my career. I do, however, hope to have another kid and raise my family here in Camas.“
Camas High School is a great school because of teachers like Mrs. Straw who love what they do and truly love the kids they work with. Straw, like many teachers at Camas, has a distinct teaching style; this is what makes each class different, fun, and entertaining. She brings a lot of real life experience to Health, and that is why she is perfect to teach here at Camas.
