Star Wars is an epic series that has captivated people’s attention since the first movie was released in 1977. After making the two sequels the movie-makers went back in a time to tell the story of Anakin Skywalker and a younger Obi-Wan Kenobi. Once that was finished in 2005 it seemed like Star Wars had been wrapped up and put away.
That is, until a trailer for The Force Awakens blew up the internet in 2015. With J.J. Abrams directing, the newest addition to the franchise was a box-office hit, bringing back beloved characters such as Leia (Carrie Fisher ) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford) as well as adding new faces like Rey (Daisy Ridley) and Finn (John Boyega). It’s no surprise then that when the new trailer for The Last Jedi was released on April 14th it was a memorable day for fans of the series.
The trailer opened with a shot of Rey, supposedly on the island where we left her in The Force Awakens handing a lightsaber to a (silent) Luke Skywalker. Then comes a voice over from the Jedi himself as he seems to coach her on using the force. It’s obviously working, because we see Rey making a cluster of rocks float into the air.
From then on Rey begins describing what she sees within the force; “light, darkness, a balance”, to which Luke responds, “It’s so much bigger”. While they’re busy talking the shots show both sides as the war between good and evil ensues. There are holograms, spaceships, epic space battles (and a shot of the Millennium Falcon!). When the trailer ends it leaves us with a final quote from Luke: “I only know one truth. It’s time for the Jedi to end.”
What could that mean? Anxious movie goers have to wait until this Christmas when it comes out to discover that.
