Netflix original series, 13 Reasons Why, came out March 31st on Netflix with their 13 episode series. Selena took part in the show stating that “It hits a very important part of me”, and she hopes that kids and teens can learn from it. She believes that “They have to see something that’s frightening…I want them to understand it…I would do anything to have a good influence on this generation.” (CNN)
Hannah Baker, played by Katherine Langford, committed suicide when people at her school were bullying her. After she died, she left tapes of 13 reasons why she made the choice to end her life. Each person on her recordings received the tapes and was instructed to pass them on to the next person. Through her tapes, secrets came out that could destroy people’s reputation
The story of Hannah Baker was well shown throughout the show, going into depth on what happened to her and how it led to her taking her own life. It shows things that people usually try to pull under the rug.
The acting throughout the show was phenomenal! It covered disturbing issues and the acting made it feel real. Although some parts may be disturbing to some, it’s what happens in everyday life. The music choice was also what made part of the show great. The use of indie music along with Selena Gomez cover of the song, “Only You”, makes it more intriguing and powerful.
What viewers really enjoyed was that outside of the show, the cast is all close friends. Throughout the making of the series, fellow cast members posted tons of Instagram photos of them hanging out together. Also, Alisha Boe and Tommy Dorfman, cast members of the show, recently got matching tattoos with Selena Gomez of a semicolon which represents, “a movement dedicated to presenting hope for those suffering from depression, thoughts of suicide, addiction, and self-injury.” (Alisha Boe) Then very recently another cast member, Brandon Flynn got a semicolon tattoo and stated, “be the author of your own story and allow your story to continue because it could help change others in the world.” It became clear then that the people in the show are dedicated to their project, making the series more of a success!
The show] is very realistic.” Bailey Grubbs
“It’s very sad, but I’m glad they made a show about it…a small comment can affect someone.” Alana Smith
All around this show was amazing! I recommend that everyone watches this in their lifetime. It spreads a message that is empowering and needed. It teaches us that we need to be kind to one another. Everyone is facing their own problems and all the gossip and hate needs to stop! He teaches us how the hate we protrude can cause people to take their own life and how that can lead to a life full of guilt.

How do you feel about the school district sending emails to parents telling them to not let their kids watch the show? I personally don’t agree with these actions by the school district.
