Camas girls’ basketball made history in March. No, they did not make it to the championship game, but they made it to the quarterfinal games, the furthest a Camas team has ever been.
The Papermakers came out with a strong win versus Eastlake, 44-36 on Wednesday, March 1 in the Tacoma Dome. The win tasted especially sweet to Camas due to the loss they suffered to Eastlake last season, dropping them from the state tournament in bi-districts.
The Eastlake win guaranteed Camas two more games in the Dome, leaving them only one win away from playing on Saturday. Following Wednesday’s game, the team took a loss against Moses Lake High School on Thursday, 36-46. With the championship game out of the picture, Camas still had a chance to secure a game on Saturday in the consolation bracket.
Unfortunately, the girls took another loss against Sunnyside on Friday, 34-45, taking them out of the state tournament.
The team finished with being top eight in the state, highest any Camas basketball team has ever been. This is the first set of seniors to ever make it to the Tacoma Dome.
Senior Emma Jones comments, “It was very cool to accomplish a goal that we have had for all four years. We made history and our basketball team will never be forgotten for that.”
“It is great for the girls’ basketball program and was a really special experience. It was a super fun team experience and something I’ll always remember,” Senior Megan Finely adds. “We made history!”
