Camas Girls Basketball made school history Wednesday, February 1. After defeating the reigning league champs from Skyview, the Lady Papermakers seized their first league champions title. 

Last season, after losing a tough battle to Skyview for league champs yet again, coach Scott Preuninger required the girls to watch their rivals cut down the nets.

“That brought out the fire and passion in us,” senior Teague Schroeder told the Post-Record. “We didn’t want to see that again. We wanted to be the ones to cut the nets down.”  

After four years and countless hours of putting in hard work at the gym, Teague Schroeder, Emma Jones, Stephanie Knight, and Meghan Finley finally received their long-awaited wish of being league champs.

Following the game, Finley felt that the win “was a really gratifying feeling, especially when we’ve waited four years for this experience.”

Every girl waited her turn as the anticipation grew to finally climb the ladder and cut their very own piece of net.

“It felt so good,” Jones added, “to finally achieve the goal that we had been after since the beginning of the season.”

To them, cutting the net did not only symbolize winning league, but also rewarded all the work and dedication they have put into this past season.

“We’ve never beat Skyview on our home floor, never won league, and never beat Skyview twice in one season,” Schroeder elaborates. 

Schroeder was the top scorer of the game, leading the Papermakers with 16 points including five 3-pointers and one free throw.

The Lady Papermakers went 8-0 in league and, after winning the first bi-district game February 8 against Olympia, has improved their season record to 14-6. The team is advancing on to the second round of bi-districts on February 9 at 6:00 versus Rogers.

UPDATE:

The Camas girls continued their season well into the state tournament, playing all the way to the quarterfinals. On Wednesday, March 1, the team defeated Eastlake High 44-36, followed by back to back losses to Moses Lake and Sunnyside 36-46 and 34-45, respectively. The team finished with 8th place in state!
