While many American high schools provide the students with a winter formal dance, Camas High School (CHS) has decided to switch from this to a more casual dance called Glo-Lo.

“Camas decided to switch to Glo-Lo for our winter dance because we have been having a continuous decline in attendance for the winter formal dances. Glo-Lo is a more laid-back, informal dance, which appeals to more of our student body compared to the winter formals,” Emily Parker, CHS Junior and ASB member said.
Due to these efforts to make the dance more appealing to all students, the attendance was much higher and more of a success compared to past winter formals.
“You know a dance is successful when people come and stay the whole three hours and that’s what happened,” Valerie Parbon, CHS ASB teacher said.
The preparation for Glo-Lo is also vastly different from the winter formal preparation. For Glo-Lo, ASB spends time preparing games and activities and many hours blacking out the dance area with posters. The budget is also distributed differently allowing for a more diverse set of entertainment.
“We’ve hired Naail for the last two years, which means we spend less money on the DJ, but we also spend more money on our games and creating a fun atmosphere with more immersive decorations,” Parker said.

This allows for more diversity in activities which attracts more students. Glo-Lo provides various games for students that may want to do more than just dance.
“Instead of laser tag this year we are doing dodgeball,” Parbon said.
CHS ASB has decided that it would be best to continue the tradition of a more casual dance. Although they are not sure how long Glo-Lo will continue, it has definitely proven to be a dance that many students look forward to.
“I think the plan is to keep the winter dance Glo-Lo or something more casual to break up homecoming and prom which are the two formal dances. As of now, Glo-Lo is gaining more attention than last year so I think we will keep it Glo-Lo for some time,” Reagan Sheffield, CHS Junior and ASB member said.
With the goal of creating a highly attended and successful dance, CHS ASB has put together an exciting event that will be held on Feb. 8 containing diverse activities and music for all students to enjoy.
