During the 2023-2024 school year, the Camas High School (CHS) girls basketball team won the state championship title. For this upcoming season, the girls are working towards winning that first-place trophy again.
The loss of multiple seniors has raised some concerns about the 2024-2025 season, but there is assurance that the players will continue to strive for that state championship title.
“[We are focusing on] proving that we are still good [because] people think that we are going to have a fall off [since] we lost a lot of our seniors,” CHS senior Sophie Buzzard said. “[We are going to show] the people that we still have a chance at state.”
The younger and new girls are determined to step up and keep the state title by playing their hardest and working cohesively with one another.
“This group is hungry to get back in the gym and defend our state title. We have lots of new faces that are looking to step up and make big contributions this season,” CHS Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Scott Thompson said. “[We will accomplish our goal due to] great effort and great chemistry.”
The drive and determination these girls have as well as the dedication to their sport is what helps them strive to stay on top.
Even if they lost multiple seniors, those seniors still left the others with important advice and lessons that they can take with them throughout their high school careers.
“The seniors taught the other girls to lead by example by leaving clues on how to be an [effective] and good leader,” CHS senior Keirra Thompson said.
Knowing how to step up and help others is a lesson that the previous seniors wanted to share with the other girls. The advice they had for the girls not only was beneficial for them on the basketball court, but it was also applicable to daily life.
When it comes to coping with specific losses, the team needs to strengthen its defense so that it can remain strong when it faces off against other teams. Some restructuring also needs to occur within the program.
“We are working on rebuilding our program by getting girls up and [prepared] for the season,” Thompson said.
The team is ready to take on any opposition, give it their all through adjustments, and keep focused on their goal. They are excited to see what this season will bring and are determined to guard their state title.
