Nearly a sixth of the way through the school year, Camas High School (CHS), Boys Football remains undefeated. CHS is first in the Greater Saint Helens League (GHSL) and has a perfect 5-0-0 record.
Starting the year with a new coach is typically a challenge but boys football is relentless and on the path to victory. This year marks Camas High School Boys Varsity Football Head Coach Adam Mathieson’s first year as Head Coach. Previously, Coach Mathieson has worked with Mountain View High School’s football program and was their head coach for 16 years before coming to CHS.
“I spent the last 16 years coaching at Mountain View and it doesn’t vary much from CHS,” Mathieson said. “Football kids are typically a hard-working, passionate group of young people and I have found that to be true at CHS.”
With a new coach comes new tactics. This can uncover newfound strengths and weaknesses on a team.
“Each week brings its own areas of growth, but at this point, the players in the program have answered every challenge that we have placed in front of them,” Mathieson said.
Athletes have mentioned that working with a new coach is typically a challenge.
“The season has been going great so far; new head coach, but nothing has changed,” Camas High School Boys Varsity Football Senior Captain Nikko Speer said. “It is the same team and the same work effort. The coaching has always been great. Now we finally get to put it all together,” Speer said.
A couple of CHS senior football players have been offered scholarships, each from a different school.
“As of right now Luke Webb and I are the only ones with offers,” Speer said. “Luke is committed to Washington State, but I have not committed yet.”
“I look forward to spending time with the team. We are all a family, especially this year we get to travel all over the place,” said Speer.
CHS football’s current record is giving the team high hopes for state this year.
“We are simply trying to be the best team that we can be each time we take the field,” Mathieson said.
“Our goal is to win a [state championship] ring this year,” Speer said.
Thus far, CHS football remains undefeated and is scheduled to face off against Monroe High School this Friday, before approaching bi-districts.
