School can be difficult for a myriad of reasons. Often, students have too much on their agenda: athletics and homework, other extracurricular activities, and, if there is any remaining time, a social life.
At Camas High School, (CHS) some of the people who have it the worst are student-athletes since they must maintain their grades even to play their sports, they must do well in their sport, and as a teenager, it’s vital to have strong friendships.
A topic most do not like to discuss is procrastination and while procrastination is not recommended to be done sometimes it is what happens naturally to people who are so busy and have no time to sit down and crank out an assignment right when they get it.
“It helps me focus and do my work,” CHS senior and Camas Boys Varsity Tennis Captain Dawson Sheffield said.
Seniors have gone through about four years of learning how to manage their time and have somewhat figured out what works best for them and what they think would work best for students new to CHS.
“One thing that has been hard this year and last, is [managing] my free time,” CHS senior and Camas Girls Varsity Soccer Manager Ava Tourbin said.
When it comes to Running Start, the challenge is even greater. The social aspect of normal high school life is altered significantly since students often choose to take few classes at CHS. This means that these students will spend less time on the high school campus, and subsequently have less time with their peers.
“I am free most hours, except when I am busy working, which makes it harder to connect with people in person unless they are also doing running start,” Tourbin said.
Through the years, Tourbin has learned some things that have helped her with schoolwork and staying on top of her academics.
“For homework, I have learned I need some sort of planner telling me what to do and when it is due. Having a schedule has helped with the Clark workload,” Tourbin said.
Being organized is also beneficial to students who have a lot going on in their lives because it takes away stress from not knowing when something is due or when something is happening.
CHS senior and girls varsity soccer player Rachel Houston offered advice on maintaining an organized schedule.
“One thing that has helped me balance homework and everything else is focusing on getting all of it done in my free time at school so I do not have to worry about it later,” Houston said.
