Camas High School (CHS) recently had snowfall on the campus and its local mountain, Mount Hood. Snow comes with the possibilities of sledding, snowball fights, snowboarding and skiing. CHS runs a ski bus that takes students to Mount Hood Meadows SkiBowl to participate in snow sports on the slopes. This allows those who love the sport to ski with friends and offers opportunities for those who have never skied to learn.

“I don’t know much about the ski bus, but I think it’s a great way for students who love skiing to get access to go. Ski gear is expensive and I think a way to improve the program would be to have donated gear that students can use if they don’t have their own,” CHS Spanish teacher Jessi Obradovic said.

Skiing is limited to a specific time of year as the sparks will only operate if they have a certain amount of snow. This upcoming ski bus trip is the only one CHS will offer this school year. Interested students can find posters with information around the school.

“No, I don’t think I have heard about the ski bus at CHS, but I think anyone with any level of skiing could use the program. While I don’t enjoy skiing and I wouldn’t use the bus myself, it’s cool that CHS offers it,” CHS junior Zoe Webster said.

The ski bus aims to allow those who love skiing to travel easily to the slopes. The bus will take students up to the SkiBowl every Saturday in January. This trip costs money as students must pay for their own lift pass and rent equipment if they have none.

“I haven’t heard about the ski bus in the announcements, but I have seen posters around the school. I think the bus is aimed toward more experienced skiers because of the time they would spend skiing alone, not with a guide. I have thought about riding the ski bus, but I like having control of when and how long I ski, which I would have if I went in my car,” CHS junior Alex McNutt said.

The ski bus is one of CHS’s many opportunities for its students. While skiing is not a sport the school competes in, this bus helps students who love to ski get access to the SkiBowl. Students who wish to participate should be prepared to bring their equipment or rent it and pay for a lift pass.
