Girls Tennis Season Kicks Off
March 20, 2023
The girls tennis season has started at Camas High School (CHS) for the 2022-2023 school year. With teams consisting of multiple talented players, girls tennis is projected to perform splendidly this season.
Tennis is a sport that everyone can enjoy and that promotes socializing. When it comes to the reasons why girls play tennis, one of the most appealing factors of tennis is the amazing community and the enjoyable playing time.
“I play tennis because I get to hang out with friends and stay active,” said junior Vivienne Petracca. “It feels so good to get a satisfying serve or slice in and it makes the game a ton of fun!”
With a vast pool of players last year, students entering tennis may be intimidated at first, but understanding the players in the community and interacting with each other relieves this tension. The positive tennis community allows players to feel more at ease with their team and engage with one another.
“The community of the team is great since we all support each other during our matches,” said Petracca. “We all hop on a bus together to get to matches which is very exciting.”
When it comes to what the tennis players expect this year, each individual has their own set of expectations and aspirations for this year, such as qualifying for tennis regionals, qualifying for
tennis state, or simply having an enjoyable season. Junior Fiona Zou has some goals of her own and goals for her team.
“I think our number one will make it to state and possibly win state this year,” Zou said. “Hopefully our doubles team will place higher than they did last year and hopefully I will make it to state this year.”
Senior Joy Young, who is one of the two girls tennis captains, also believes in the strong team this year.
“I think we have a strong team this year, and we have a high chance of making it to state,” Young said. “We lost some players last year due to graduation but we have great players coming in this year.”
Young anticipates serving as an example and a strong leader for her fellow teammates as she co-captains the team.
“I look forward to being co-captain with Lena Trieu and being a good role model for our strong team this year and bringing home some awesome wins for Camas!” Young said.
With that said, the tennis team’s early-season matches have already begun, including the match versus Olympia on March 18. Camas will soon witness incredible feats performed by the CHS girls tennis representatives at the competitions to come.
