The Camas and Union rivalry always leads to intense matchups between the two schools. The rivalry seems to be even more intense in the sport of soccer. Players who play in the game always note that it is one of the most physically demanding and intense games of the season. “The competitiveness and the desire to play well to win made these games especially fun to be a part of,” former Camas High School (CHS) soccer player Dominic Fewel said.

Many around the community refer to the rivalry between Camas and Union as “El Clásico” due to its vast similarities to the famous rivalry between two of the best professional soccer teams in the world, FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, which also holds this nickname. “I think the El Clásico nickname makes sense for the rivalry. The real El Clásico is the biggest game in all of soccer, and in our league Camas vs. Union is as well,” Fewel said.

It is always a great atmosphere between the players, coaches, and fans. The stands are always packed with supporters of both sides when the two teams match up against each other. “The atmosphere in the stadium was always raised and the players always showed up ready to play,” Fewel said.

“It’s really fun getting to play in rival games. There was always a certain atmosphere heading into the games against [Union]. Everyone knew we had to do everything we possibly could to beat them,” former CHS soccer player Noah Fraizer said.

Throughout the years, Camas and Union have matched up in many tight games. Both Camas and Union have won their fair share of games, and it is never clear who will win until the final whistle blows. One of the most memorable matchups between Camas and Union in recent years was the trilogy of matches during the 2020-21 season. Camas won two of those games with a combined score of 11-0, with the two wins split up by a scoreless tie.

“Beating them 11-0 on aggregate had to be one of my favorite memories in high school. Losing my junior year and not being able to play in state senior year due to Covid was tough, but I couldn’t have been happier with how our senior season went,” Fraizer said.

“My favorite memory was scoring a hat trick at home in our first match playing against Union. I played club [soccer] with a lot of the Union players and we were talking trash the entire year, so when we destroyed them it was so validating,” former CHS soccer player Ethan Jud said.
